I'll give you opponauts a brief update of my 2002 Touring Projekt as it's been a terrible week. The donor car is almost completely stripped, finally dropped the shaft and got out the wiring harness wednesday evening and only things that remain now are diff, trans and engine.
So that's good. But...
Then the new body came back from the shop. Looking like this:
See the yellow arrow-shaped tape? Here's a few more:
Those arrows mark the spots we're not happy about. Really not happy. For a reason. Because they are pinpointing total failures of the professional paintshop:
So it's going back to the paintshop today. I was really set on getting it ready for summer but the way I'm running into these issues I'll probably end up finishing it in or after the summer.
I'll have more time to focus on the engine for now, that's the only advantage I see at this moment. All parts for making it a tii have arrived. I only have to figure out how I'm turning the existing fuel-tank into one capable of supporting the kügelfischer injection (retour-line, bigger bore 'normal' pipe) as an original Touring tii-tank (the touring tank differs from the normal '02-tank) seems impossible to find.

Looks like a rush-job on that paint. I had the same issues with the paint job on the Willys, but fortunately it's not a BMW and the paint is only there to keep it from rusting any faster :)

ugh are you kidding me? I could have done that with a paintbrush. Especially after all the prep work you are into that is a slap in the face

It was quite obiously a rush-job. Believe me, these 02's know how to rust, I'll bet my touring knows how to catch up with your Willys anyway!

I know, I was especially flabbergasted that there were so many spots. Unbelievable. But thanks!

Nothing rusts like a Jeep, unless it's a Fiat X1/9.

No, I'm not kidding, just utterly disappointed... I don't even want to know how they're going to correct it or what time it will take to clean it up. We've done the inside, not visible parts, ourselves and believe: that had better quality!

yeah man. I sent your pic over to a buddy's dad who just got done working a 356A (body man for 50+ years) and he said you should be livid. But he loves your project

Thanks, I love it to! I wasn't that angry though, if they correct it properly the only thing I end up getting is a delay of getting behind the wheel again but I'll live. If they get it right next time that is.

Wow, is that E3 yours? Which one is it, 2800? Great cars (great colour!), too bad we don't see many around here no more. Nice rims, I'd lose the mirror though.

no, just my dream E3. Very few of those came in Inka. that mirror is ridiculous. That was probably a Bavaria with no passenger mirror to begin with. I had those rims on my blue 3.0s, a bit different on my green 3.3Li

I'll have some Alpina rims like these left when I mount my Campagnolo Elektrons although mine (still seriously good looking) have got 4-lugs obviously. But, next to the Campagnolos (I truly love those!), these Alpinas are the best for BMWs of this era. I better keep them in my growing pile of parts, you never know.

oh yeah they are great. I put GTI snowflakes on my last 2002 and they were perfect. I had 80's 325IS wheels on it but no spacers, so they would rub on lock. I think all it needed was 5mm
